6/2 - Pat - rick's back ON LINE! (sung to tune of BSB)

What I did:

Well, today was not that exciting of a day, so the fact that the internet is down and you won’t be seeing this until at least tomorrow is not a big deal. I did not have anything to do today (as far as people to meet or places to go), but both Graham and his wife did. So, I stayed at their house by myself for pretty much the whole day. Graham did work mostly from home today, although he had to meet someone this morning, and left right before dinner time to fly somewhere for the night.

So, I woke up and ate some breakfast. I watched some tv while I ate, then got cleaned up. I think I read some and got on my computer a little before lunch. Graham gave me a bunch more reading material over fresh expressions of church, which was great because it was stuff he thought to be essential for what I was doing, but that I had never really heard of before. It was all by British authors I guess, and was more specifically British oriented, which was hard to find in America outside of journal articles.

I walked down to the grocery store to find some lunch (they said I could dig through their fridge to see if I could find anything, but I just went and bought something myself). I came back and cooked that up, then got back on my computer to establish some more contacts and set some dates to meet people. So, I was actually doing some very important stuff, and I think I have a much better idea of how my itinerary will play out now, but it was just incredibly boring work. And it seemed to go on forever. I am trying to schedule by location so that I do not have to travel a ton back and forth, but also, a lot of people are on vacation right now, or dates conflict with other places I wanted to go visit. So it is a lot of trying one thing, then scrapping it all and trying something else. I finally sent all the emails I could take for the day and decided to sit back and wait for replies.

So, I went outside on their little patio area and really dived into the books Graham gave me. I have only mostly made it through one right now, but it has proved to be very helpful to my research and my overall understanding of church. It especially has helped me in trying to distinguish between terms such as emergent and fresh expression. I look forward to the rest of the books he gave me. I stayed outside for a long time until dinner. I knew that I would be on my own for that too, but that Mrs. Horsley would be coming by to show me what I had to cook with before she went out to a dinner.

So, I was given some hamburger meat and told I could have whatever I find. I cooked up the hamburgers and had a nice dinner. Unfortunately, that is when I found out the internet was broken, so I turned to the tv again. Everything I wanted to watch (House, Dollhouse, various other things) were on channels that were not purchased. Much to my despair, I then turned back to the books and whatever else there is to do in a still somewhat unfamiliar house with no tv or internet. But later I did turn it on and caught a Coldplay concert that was aired from some BBC station and an episode of Flight of the Conchords, so that made up for it all.

What I learned:

I can really never handle a job that requires me to sit behind a computer all day long. And I really can’t stand sending emails all day.

I can cook. At least I’ll find out in a few hours when I either do or do not get sick.

The weather in England really is about as perfect as it gets this time of year. Sorry for those of you suffering in Texas reading this.

There are a lot of differentiated Fresh Expressions of church going on right now, but the one service I have experienced I could not classify under only one of the divisions listed in the book I am reading. Instead a lot of different things from different types describe what is going on there. I have a feeling that that is not an isolated occurrence either.

Oh yeah, Staci got my riddle. If you actually wondered about it at all, you can look at her comment to confirm your answer.
